Ability Research, Inc began in the early 1990's when its founder and president, John Severson, participated in a volunteer project for a local residential facility. The "LightBoard" was born out of this effort and consisted of a computer keyboard operated by head motion alone, designed for use by persons with only limited head control and stability. The response following a magazine article featuring the product was overwhelmingly positive and Ability Research, Inc was created to manufacture and market the LightBoard.

Over the years, many other devices were created for head pointing access, augmentatative communication, and remote control including the Boardmaker Activity Pad, Activity Pad, HandHeld Voice, LightBeam, LightPointer, and now the e-Shield family of products for i-Pad protection and audio enhancement.
